Calculating…
The Child Tax Credit reduces your tax bill directly, dollar for dollar, for each qualifying child under 17 at the end of the year. A separate, smaller Credit for Other Dependents covers dependents who don't meet the Child Tax Credit's age or relationship test — an older child in college, or a dependent parent, for example. The full credit phases out gradually once your income passes a threshold that's high enough that most middle-income families never see it reduced at all.

2025 amounts

$2,200 per qualifying child under 17, of which up to $1,700 per child is refundable (the Additional Child Tax Credit) even if you owe no tax. A dependent who doesn't qualify (too old, or not a close enough relative) can still earn a $500 Credit for Other Dependents. The full credit starts phasing out above $400,000 (joint) / $200,000 (other statuses).

A real example

A married couple filing jointly with $90,000 in wages and one qualifying child claims a $2,200 Child Tax Credit for 2025.
