How does a tax filing extension work?

Your actual return

An extension gives you more time to file your return — it does not give you more time to pay. If you owe tax and don't pay it by the original deadline, interest and a late-payment penalty start accruing that day, extension or not, though the penalty is smaller than the one for not filing at all. Filing an extension is simple and free, and there's rarely a good reason not to file one if you're not ready — the real risk is treating it as an extension to pay, not just to file.

What it actually gives you

Filing Form 4868 by the original deadline (2026-04-15) automatically pushes your filing deadline back six months, to mid-October, with no reason required and no cost. It does NOT extend the time to pay: any balance you owe is still due on the original date, and interest plus a late-payment penalty (smaller than the late-filing penalty) starts accruing the day after if you don't pay it.

What AsasifyTax currently supports

AsasifyTax's own extension filing today covers business returns (Form 7004) and nonprofit returns (Form 8868). An individual Form 4868 filing flow isn't built yet - if you need to extend your own personal return, file directly with the IRS at irs.gov using their Free File or Direct Pay options.
